This word come from Roman army,
which was the smallest unit of a Roman legion.
A legion was nominally composed of 6000 soldiers.
This title granted to any walker who completes 100 English landmiles within 24 hours.
The centurion was distinguished by his uniform: his armor was silvered, he wore his sword on his left side rather than his right, he wore greaves on his legs.
Under each centurion was a standardbearer, a deputy (optio) who took command of the century if the centurion was killed or wounded, and the tesserarius, who was in charge of the sentries.
