Codemakers offers online introductory, intermediate, and advanced computer programming courses to kids ages 12+.

We teach programming in much the same way colleges do - by using Python to develop coding skills that are easily transferable to other programming languages. Eight of the top 10 computer science departments in the U.S. (including MIT) now use Python rather than Java or C++ to teach basic computer programming. Our curriculum requires students to begin writing code immediately.  No dragging and dropping, no mastering technical skills without concepts. We offer lots of code writing games and challenges that students eventually develop from scratch.

We have been offering summer classes in the Boston area since 2016. This year we decided to change our teaching model from instructor led classes to online courses. Our lively and engaging animated videos are self-paced and short (~10 minutes per lesson @ five lessons each for Intro, Intermediate, and Advanced levels), making it easy for students to fit course modules in between homework, sports, video games, social media, school and friends.  We also try to develop coding projects that kids can identify with, from stories and mazes to Minecraft mods and alien invaders.

Our video-based model makes the teaching feel interactive - kids can move at their own pace, practice with fun exercises, games and challenges, and eventually learn to develop their own projects. Our video scripts and course modules are based on well-received lectures and teaching materials: parents like that their kids are learning actual college-level course material at an intuitive, progressively complex level. Kids and teens feel like they're really coding, not just going through the motions.

Program Structure and Pricing

We offer three levels - Introduction, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each level consists of five lessons: five animated videos, five practice games, and a review assignment that students  complete and check before moving on to the next lesson. Students also get member access to the Codemakers community board which is staffed to provide technical help, answers to content questions, and ongoing coding challenges.

To encourage kids and teens from all backgrounds to learn Python, we are keeping prices relatively reasonable (about the cost of one or two online video games): $49 for each level. For families in need, we will be offering a sliding scale fee schedule and scholarship program (a free course download option).

We are requesting capital funding to help cover production costs for the videos and programming costs for additional coding games and instructions to round out the curriculum.

We hope you'll join us in helping make coding accessible to all kids. If you could help spread the word, we'd really appreciate it!
