According to a post on official Google Blog, Google is planning to release a new OS called Google Chrome OS soon.
Following is the summary (by me of course) of the new OS:
- Google Chrome OS is open source project and is free - As other Google products such as Android and Google Chrome web browser this is another open source project. Google hopes the community helps to make the OS better and better. Anyway two heads are better than one.
- Google Chrome OS is designed for power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-sized desktop systems
- Google Chrome OS's kernel is Linux-based. Since Linux kernel is a good-enough wheel, smart googlers don't need to kill their brains to reinvent one.
- Google Chrome OS will use a new windowing system other than existing windowing systems (KDE, GNome, etc). The new windowing system may not have so many features as other ones. But the new windowing system will make the OS simple and easy to maintain. Google will never develop a desktop environment as complicated (and stupid) as Windows Vista.
- Google Chrome OS is designed to be fast, simple and secure - Yes, that's the Google STYLE.
- Google Chrome OS encourages developers to develop web applications instead of traditional desktop applications because Google (and most of us) believes web is the best computing platform now.
- Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 and ARM chips - Google needs this to please as many partners as possible. To support ARM chips, Google can gain supports from most cell phone vendors; to support x86 chips, it can also make traditional PC vendors happy.
- You know "netbook" is a buzz work at these days. Google also doesn't miss this great chance.
